Δεκαεπτά μετανάστες έχασαν την ζωή τους κατά τη διάρκεια απόπειρας διάπλου της Μεσογείου από την Λιβύη προς την Ιταλία.

Σύμφωνα με τις πρώτες πληροφορίες, οι μετανάστες επέβαιναν σε φουσκωτή λέμβο και ο θάνατος είναι πιθανόν να προήλθε από αφυδάτωση και υποθερμία.

Τα πτώματα περισυνέλεξαν ταχύπλοα του ιταλικού λιμενικού με την βοήθεια του εμπορικού πλοίου Έτνα, ενώ 76 μετανάστες μεταφέρονται ζωντανοί στη Σικελία.

Είναι η πρώτη τραγική εξέλιξη από τότε που, πριν από πέντε εβδομάδες, η ανθρωπιστική επιχείρηση Μάρε Νόστρουμ αντικαταστάθηκε από την ευρωπαϊκή επιχείρηση φύλαξης των συνόρων και παροχής βοήθειας "Τρίτων".
