IMAGE DISTRIBUTED FOR THE HUMANE SOCIETY OF THE UNITED STATES - The Humane Society of the United States is working with the Puerto Rican government on a wide-ranging project to improve the lives of animals in the commonwealth. The HSUS will address the problems of puppy mills and overpopulation of cats and dogs, through conducting trainings with the FBI, police, prosecutors and Animal Control, as well as educating school children. On March 22, 2015, HSUS staff visited several locations in Puerto Rico, in order to assess the scope of the issues. One location was Dead Dog Beach in Yabucoa, shown here, which is known for its large population of stray dogs. In this photo, a puppy with a skin condition is shown on the beach. The puppyâs owner, who couldnât afford to treat the condition, asked The HSUS to take her. The HSUS took her to a vetâs office to be treated, after which she will be fostered and made available for adoption. (Ricardo Arduengo/AP Images for The Humane Society of the United States)
