Ισχυρός σεισμός, ο οποίος, σύμφωνα με πρώιμες πληροφορίες, ήταν ισχύος 6,4 βαθμών στην κλίμακα Ρίχτερ, καταγράφηκε νοτιοανατολικά του Τόκιο το πρωί, σύμφωνα με το αμερικανικό γεωδυναμικό ινστιτούτο (USGS).

Το επίκεντρο του σεισμού ήταν 232 χιλιόμετρα νοτιοανατολικά της ιαπωνικής πρωτεύουσας με εστιακό βάθος 10 χιλιομέτρων, ανακοίνωσε το ινστιτούτο.
