Additionally, overcrowding has strengthened prison gangs which now span the country and contol certain peripheries of cities including Rio de Janeiro, Sao Paulo and Sao Luis. Brazil now has the fourth-largest prison population in the world behind the U.S., Russia and China. The population of those imprisoned had quadrupled in the past twenty years to around 550,000 and the country needs at least 200,000 new incarceration spaces to eliminate overcrowding. Τουλάχιστον δέκα άνθρωποι σκοτώθηκαν από την εξέγερση που έγινε σε φυλακή της Βραζιλίας, αργά το βράδυ του Σαββάτου, σύμφωνα με τοπικά ΜΜΕ. Συνθήκες χάους επικρατούν στο σύστημα σωφρονισμού της χώρας, ενώ από τις ταραχές που έχουν ξεσπάσει από τις αρχές του χρόνου, έχουν σκοτωθεί περισσότεροι από 116 κρατούμενοι.

Η νέα σύγκρουση ανάμεσα σε αντίπαλες συμμορίες ξέσπασε το απόγευμα στο σωφρονιστικό κατάστημα Αλκασουίς, τη μεγαλύτερη φυλακή της Πολιτείας του Ρίου Γκράντε ντου Νόρτσι, στο βορειοανατολικό τμήμα της χώρας.

«Από όσα είδαμε, μπορούμε να διαβεβαιώσουμε ότι υπάρχουν τουλάχιστον τρεις κρατούμενοι νεκροί (...) είδαμε τα κεφάλια τους», δήλωσε ο συντονιστής της διεύθυνσης σωφρονιστικών καταστημάτων της Πολιτείας, ο Ζεμίλτον Σίλβα, σε βραζιλιάνικα

ΜΜΕ.

Οι αρχές έχουν περικυκλώσει τη φυλακή, όπου κρατούνται υπεράριθμοι έγκλειστοι, για να αποτρέψουν ενδεχόμενες απόπειρες απόδρασης, αλλά εξήγησαν ότι η χωροφυλακή και οι σωφρονιστικοί υπάλληλοι αναγκαστικά θα περιμένουν να ξημερώσει για να μπουν στις πτέρυγες, καθώς οι φυλακισμένοι έχουν κόψει το ρεύμα και φέρονται να είναι βαριά οπλισμένοι.

Το επεισόδιο προστίθεται στο κύμα βίας που σαρώνει τις φυλακές της Βραζιλίας. Ήδη από τις αρχές του Ιανουαρίου έχουν χάσει τη ζωή τους σχεδόν εκατό κρατούμενοι.

Οι αρχές αποδίδουν τις σφαγές στον πόλεμο που μαίνεται ανάμεσα στις μεγαλύτερες συμμορίες της χώρας, με διακύβευμα τον έλεγχο της διακίνησης κοκαΐνης: πρόκειται για την Πρώτη Διοίκηση της Πρωτεύουσας (Premier Comando de la Capital, ), που εδρεύει στο Σάο Πάουλου, και την Κόκκινη Διοίκηση (Comando Vermelho), που εδρεύει στο Ρίου ντε Ζανέιρου, καθώς και άλλες συμμορίες που έχουν συμμαχήσει μαζί τους.

Σύμφωνα με βραζιλιάνικες εφημερίδες, η σύγκρουση στη φυλακή Αλκασουίς ξέσπασε ανάμεσα σε μέλη της

και μέλη του Συνδικάτου του Εγκλήματος, μιας συμμορίας που έχει συμμαχήσει με τη CV.

Η μη κυβερνητική οργάνωση Παρατηρητήριο Ανθρωπίνων Δικαιωμάτων (Human Rights Watch,HRW) κατήγγειλε την Πέμπτη «τις απάνθρωπες συνθήκες στις βραζιλιάνικες φυλακές», όπου το επίπεδο πληρότητας βρίσκεται στο 167% βάσει της επίσημης χωρητικότητας των σωφρονιστικών καταστημάτων, όπως αποκαλύπτουν τα στοιχεία του ίδιου του υπουργείου Δικαιοσύνης.

Πενήντα έξι κρατούμενοι σφαγιάστηκαν στις αρχές του Ιανουαρίου σε μια φυλακή στο Μανάους, στη βόρεια Βραζιλία. Πέντε ημέρες αργότερα, άλλοι 31 δολοφονήθηκαν με βάρβαρο τρόπο σε φυλακή στη Χοράιμα, μια Πολιτεία της βόρειας Βραζιλίας. Την 8η Ιανουαρίου ακόμη τέσσερις φυλακισμένοι σκοτώθηκαν σε άλλο σωφρονιστικό κατάστημα του Μανάους.
