Το ρήγμα που προκάλεσε τον ισχυρό σεισμό της 21ης Ιουλίου στην Κω εντόπισαν επιστήμονες, όπως αναφέρεται σε δημοσίευμα της «Καθημερινής»- όπου υπογραμμίζεται ότι η έρευνα γενικότερα προχωρά με αργούς ρυθμούς ελλείψει κονδυλίων, ενώ η περιοχή ανάμεσα στη Λέσβο και στη Χίο παραμένει αχαρτογράφηση.

Βάσει ανάλυσης δεδομένων από δορυφορικά ραντάρ βρέθηκε πως το επίμαχο ρήγμα βρίσκεται κοντά στο νησί Καρά Αντά, δίπλα στις μικρασιατικές ακτές, και έχει κλίση 40 μοιρών προς τη Μικρά Ασία, όπως επεσήμανε ο διευθυντής ερευνών στο Γεωδυναμικό Ινστιτούτο, Θανάσης Γκανάς, ο οποίος πρόσθεσε ότι η πιθανότητα ενός μετασεισμού μεταξύ 5 και 6 Ρίχτερ παραμένει, και θα χρειαστούν αρκετές εβδομάδες, ίσως και μήνες, για να απομακρυνθεί αυτό το ενδεχόμενο.
