NASA: Σεισμοί και μετασεισμοί καταγράφονται στον Άρη

Το νεότερο από τα σκάφη της NASA που προσεδαφίστηκε στον Άρη, επιβεβαιώνει ότι σεισμοί και μετασεισμοί(!) δονούν τακτικά τον κόκκινο πλανήτη.

Οι επιστήμονες ανέφεραν τη Δευτέρα (24 Φεβρουαρίου) ότι ο σεισμογράφος του διαστημικού σκάφους InSight έχει καταγράψει σειρά σεισμικών δονήσεων.

Μια σειρά ερευνητικών εργασιών επικεντρώνεται στις 174 σεισμικές δονήσεις που σημειώθηκαν τον περασμένο Σεπτέμβριο. Είκοσι τέσσερις ήταν σχετικά ισχυροί - μεγέθους 3 έως 4 ρίχτερ - και προφανώς προήλθαν από τεκτονικές αναταράξεις βαθιά στον πλανήτη. Οι υπόλοιπες ήταν μικρότερες, με αβέβαια προέλευση. Ακόμη και οι ισχυρότεροι σεισμοί, πάντως, δεν θα αποτελούσαν κίνδυνο για κανέναν στην επιφάνεια του πλανήτη, ανέφεραν ερευνητές σε συνέντευξη Τύπου.

Ενώ η ομάδα δεν μπορεί να αποκλείσει τις επιπτώσεις των μετεωριτών - η πηγή των δονήσεων φαίνεται να είναι υπόγεια, σύμφωνα με τους ερευνητές. Ο Banerdt δήλωσε ότι ήλπιζε να καταγράψει μεγαλύτερους σεισμούς, οι οποίοι είναι χρήσιμοι για να διερευνηθούν οι συνθήκες κάτω από την επιφάνεια του πλανήτη.
