Η Σόνκα Ντουκουρέ, ηθοποιός και τραγουδίστρια που υποδύθηκε την Μπιγκ Μάμα Θόρτον στην ταινία του Μπαζ Λούρμαν «Ελβις» πέθανε σε ηλικία 44 ετών.
Βρέθηκε νεκρή στο διαμέρισμά της στο Νάσβιλ την Πέμπτη σύμφωνα με Tweet του αστυνομικού τμήματος Metro Nashville Police . Ενα από τα δυο της παιδιά την βρήκε να μην έχει τις αισθήσεις της και ζήτησε βοήθεια από έναν γείτονα ο οποίος κάλεσε ασθενοφόρο.
Τα αίτια του θανάτου της δεν έχουν ξεκαθαριστεί ακόμα κι η αστυνομία δεν υποπτεύεται να έγινε κάτι παράνομο.
Η Ντουκουρέ ήταν γνωστή ως τραγουδίστρια των γκόσπελ στην περιοχή του Νάσβιλ και ο πρώτος της σημαντικός κινηματογραφικός ρόλος ήταν στην ταινία «Ελβις». Είχε μιλήσει στο The Tennessean για το πόσο σοβαρά πήρε την αποστολή να υποδυθεί τη θρυλική τραγουδίστρια των μπλουζ.
«Ήμουν πολύ συνειδητοποιημένη και ήθελα πραγματικά να αποδώσω σεβασμό, σεβασμό στην κληρονομιά της, σεβασμό στο πνεύμα της, σεβασμό σε όλα όσα προσέφερε στη μουσική και καταλάβαινα ότι μπορώ να το κάνω επειδή το έκανε και έθεσε τα θεμέλια», είπε.
Ο Θόρντον ήταν ο πρώτος που ηχογράφησε το Hound Dog και η δυνατή απόδοση του τραγουδιού από την Ντουκουρέ αφήνει αίσθηση στην ταινία.
Η Ντουκουρέ μίλησε πρόσφατα σε μαθητές της δευτεροβάθμιας εκπαίδευσης αλλά και τους ακροατές του τοπικού ραδιοφωνικού σταθμού WPLN σχετικά με τις αντιδράσεις που είχε στο Χολιγουντιανό της ντεμπούτοι.
«Ηταν εντυπωσιασμένοι κι έλεγαν ”Ουάου. Μις Σόνκα; Αλήθεια (είστε εσείς);” Και τους απάντησα: ”Εξακολουθώ να είμαι η Μις Σόνκα ξέρετε…»
Ο δήμαρχος του Νάσβιλ, Τζον Κούπερ, εξέδωσε μια ανακοίνωση τιμώντας την Ντουκουρέ:
«Τα θερμότερά μου συγχαρητήρια στην οικογένεια της Σόνκα Ντουκουρέ», είπε στο per Fox 17. Η Σόνκα αποφοίτησε από το Φισκ και θεωρούσε το Νάσβιλ πατρίδα της για πολλά χρόνια. Η δυνατή φωνή και η δεξιοτεχνία της θα ζουν μέσα από την μουσική της και τιμούμε την μνήμη της αυτή την θλιβερή μέρα».
