Η Ευρωπαϊκή Επιτροπή προτείνει την εφαρμογή προγράμματος-γέφυρας ύψους 7,7 δισεκατομμυρίων ευρώ προκειμένου η Ελλάδα να καλύψει τις ανάγκες της τον Ιούλιο, χρησιμοποιώντας τον Ευρωπαϊκό Μηχανισμό Χρηματοπιστωτικής Σταθερότητας (EFSM).
Όπως μεταδίδει το πρακτορείο Reuters, το πρόγραμμα-γέφυρα θα ισχύει για τρεις μήνες και θα αποπληρωθεί στον EFSM με τα χρήματα τα οποία η Ελλάδα θα λάβει από τον Ευρωπαϊκό Μηχανισμό Σταθερότητας (ESM) όταν ολοκληρωθούν οι διαπραγματεύσεις για το επόμενο πρόγραμμα-διάσωσης.
Ωστόσο, την ίδια στιγμή η Μεγάλη Βρετανία, η Τσεχία και η Κροατία εκφράζουν αντιρρήσεις με την πρόταση να χρησιμοποιηθεί ο EFSF για το δάνειο - γέφυρα προς την Ελλάδα κι εξετάζεται πως θα μπορούν να καμφθούν οι αντιρρήσεις τους με την παροχή εγγυήσεων για την επιστροφή των χρημάτων τους.
Ο Ευρωπαϊκός Μηχανισμός Χρηματοπιστωτικής Σταθερότητας είναι ένα πανευρωπαϊκό ταμείο στο οποίο συμμετέχουν και οι 28 της ΕΕ καθώς τον στηρίζουν μέσω των προϋπολογισμών τους. Η παροχή οικονομικής βοήθειας προς την Ελλάδα θα μπορεί να υλοποιηθεί εάν πρόταση της Ευρωπαϊκής Επιτροπής γίνει δεκτή από 16 Κράτη - Μέλη τα οποία εκπροσωπούν το 65% του πληθυσμού της Ευρώπης.
