Η αμερικανική κυβέρνηση ετοιμάζεται να μειώσει τον αριθμό των κρατουμένων στο Γκουαντάναμο κατά 17 άτομα τον Ιανουάριο, αναφέρει δημοσίευμα των New York Times.

Σύμφωνα με τις πρώτες πληροφορίες, ο υπουργός Αμύνης, Ας Κάρτερ, φέρεται να ενέκρινε το αίτημα της μεταφοράς 17 λιγότερο επικίνδυνων κρατουμένων. Όπως αναφέρει το CNN, έχουν ήδη επιλεχθεί οι χώρες στις οποίες θα εκδοθούν οι κρατούμενοι.

Αξίζει να αναφέρουμε ότι οι κρατούμενοι στο Γκουαντάναμο είναι 107, την στιγμή που στο ξεκίνημα της προεδρίας του Μπαράκ Ομπάμα ήταν 208. Στο σημείο αυτό να αναφέρουμε ότι ο Ομπάμα είχε υποσχεθεί ότι θα κλείσει το κέντρο κράτησης του Γκουαντάναμο κατά την προεκλογική του εκστρατεία το 2008.

Στο σημείο αυτό να υπενθυμίσουμε ότι το κέντρο κράτησης του Γκουαντάναμο δημιουργήθηκε στον ομώνυμο κόλπο της Κούβας όπου διαθέτουν ναυτική βάση οι Ηνωμένες Πολιτείες, μετά τις τρομοκρατικές επιθέσεις της 11ης Σεπτεμβρίου 2001.
