Τον πρεσβευτή του Βατικανού στην Άγκυρα κάλεσαν οι τουρκικές αρχές, σύμφωνα με το πρακτορείο Ρόιτερς, για να του επιδοθεί διαμαρτυρία για τις δηλώσεις που έκανε σήμερα, Κυριακή του Πάσχα, ο Πάπας Φραγκίσκος.

Ο τελευταίος χαρακτήρισε την σφαγή των Αρμενίων που έγινε πριν από 100 χρόνια στην Οθωμανική Αυτοκρατορία ως την πρώτη Γενοκτονία του 20ου αιώνα. Τόνισε μάλιστα πως με το να αρνείται κανείς το κακό είναι «σαν να αφήνει μια πληγή να αιμορραγεί».

Το γεγονός δεν έλειψε να σχολιάσει και ο υπουργός εξωτερικών της Τουρκίας, Μεβλούτ Τσαβούσογλου, ο οποίος μέσω Twitter αρακτήρισε «αβάσιμη» και «μακράν της ιστορικής πραγματικότητας» τη χρήση της λέξης «γενοκτονία».
